Amazing article. I'm in the process of trying to gain access for a university project. Doesn't sound like i've got much hope :(

I live in Corsham and want to start exploring. I used to be in the Royal Navy and thought that Rudloe Manor would be the perfect place to start.
BUT
Can I get into trouble accessing the site?
Is it out of bounds?
Do MOD patrol here?

I am not surprised at the paucity of explorers; I was stationed there for Exercise pinnacle in (I think) September 1951. When I arrived, I was met with a small building, that seemed to compose an outer office and a lift shaft. I believe the Ops room was about 120 feet underground. No smoking; fire buckets packed with cigarette ends. On a rare trip above ground discovered two large mushroom air shafts which may have also been emergency exits but I believe there was also a connection with Brown's Quarry. Think that was RN. Not comfortable but a real privilege to have spent a fortnight with a busy control room; huge table and WRAFs doing the plotting with controllers on the mezzanines. I was a National Service meteorologist. I think I would prefer to have my memories rather than crawl around a bare, deserted complex.

Not sure, I guess that is as secret as Burlington was then. There's probably a deep leve shelter in London somewhere.

Very Interesting, as I worked at Wood Norton in the 60's.

A bit of history ? :-
The quarry (mine)and the surrounding 4 acres of land belonged to Lady Fowler. The Bath and Portland Stone firms held the 100 years lease. Miss Fowler lived nearer to Gastard at Gastard House. Her relative Sir John Fowler had been Lord Mayor of London. Adjacent to the quarry entrance was/is a very fine garage where Miss Fowler kept her cars. My father kept his horticultural equipment there. The adjacent ex. stables were occupied by a Mr Langham and the end of the engine house was occupied by a Mr Clothier.

My father, Fred. Hand rented the agricultural land from Miss Fowler. As children we spent many hours exploring the "caves". The water in the trough was very refreshing. In the summer the water in the body of the mine would drain away allowing greater exploration for us children. I found out quite recently that I actually took a very "special" school friend down there. I don't know how she remembered ! Trebor

The featured picture isn't actually RAF Rudloe Manor. I visited it today. It is accessible and i have pictures. The grid reference provided is also incorrect. I can provide you with the correct one if you wish, and send you the correct some pictures which you may use.

RAF Rudloe Manor is now known as JSU Corsham. Rudloe "site 1" is now closed, this photo is of the entrance to "site 3" within the grounds of "site 2".

But yeah, you're right, it's not the place where the actual manor house is.
