I have lived on Portland all my life and it is very interesting to hear about some of the secret cold war stuff that went on.. you always hear about things of this nature on the island but that would be tellin lol x no aliens i hasten to add but submarines weapons tunnels bunkers storage etc perhaps....but what would i know im just a theology student... well we need to have some secret stuff just incase, good luck to us brits in such a case im all for it. Just interesting to know....
I worked in the Portland Rotor underground bunker during its building and at various times through it's operational life. I remember a tall lattice tower, with small lift running up it, to mount the radar transmitter. This tower was probable 100ft or more. I would be interested in any photos of this tower if any reader has one.
A single story, underground operations block constructed in 1950 as part of a project to provided complete radar cover for the UK, it went in to operation in 1953. The site is now in private ownership. Read more
